This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:4-5 – Buried with him through baptism

We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.⁵For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection.

Romans 14:7-9 – If we die, we die to the Lord

For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself.⁸For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord’s.⁹For to this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Romans 8:35, 37-39 – Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? … ³⁷No, in all these things we are more thanconquerors throughhim who loved us.³⁸For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,³⁹nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31 – The time is short

But I say this, brothers: the time is short, that from now on, both those who have wives may be as though they had none;³⁰and those who weep, as though they didn’t weep; and those who rejoice, as though they didn’t rejoice; and those who buy, as though they didn’t possess;³¹and those who use the world, as not using it to the fullest. For the mode of this world passes away.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 – Raised in glory

So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown perishable; it is raised imperishable.⁴³It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.⁴⁴It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:53-57 – Death is swallowed up in victory

For this perishable body must become imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.⁵⁴But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Hades,where is your victory?”

⁵⁶The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.⁵⁷But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – The God of all comfort

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;⁴who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 4:14 – He will raise us also

He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will present us with you.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – This light momentary affliction

So we do not lose heart.Though our outer self is wasting away,our inner selfis being renewed day by day.¹⁷Forthis light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,¹⁸as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 5:1 – A house not made with hands

For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – A new creation

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Philippians 1:21-23 – To live is Christ

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.²²But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don’t know what I will choose.²³But I am hard pressed between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

Often, for funerals, the Scripture selection will be just verse 21.

2 Timothy 1:8-14 – I know Him whom I have believed

⁸Therefore don’t be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,⁹who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal,¹⁰but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.¹¹For this I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.¹²For this cause I also suffer these things.

Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day. ¹³Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.¹⁴That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

This passage features several treasured funeral Scriptures, especially the ideas that grace was given to us “before times eternal” (v. 9), that Christ “abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News” (v. 10), and the comforting reality that “he is able to guard that which I have committed to him” (v. 12).

II Timothy 2:11-13 – We will also live with him

This saying is trustworthy:
“For if we died with him,
we will also live with him.
¹²If we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we deny him,
he also will deny us.
¹³If we are faithless,
he remains faithful;
for he can’t deny himself.”

1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 – The dead in Christ will rise

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.¹⁵For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep.¹⁶For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,¹⁷then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.

A slightly larger selection would include verses 13 through 18.

1 Peter 1:3-9 – Inheritance reserved in Heaven for you

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,⁴to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you,⁵who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.⁶Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials,⁷that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—⁸whom, not having known, you love. In him, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy that is unspeakable and full of glory,⁹receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Revelation 2:10 – The crown of life

Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Revelation 14:13 – Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord

I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.”

Revelation 21:1-7 – He will wipe away every tear

I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more.²I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.³I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.⁴He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

⁵He who sits on the throne said,“Behold, I am making all things new.”He said,“Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”⁶He said to me,“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life.⁷He who overcomes, I will give him these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son.
