An Eye for an Eye | Gamer Guides: Your ultimate source fo... (2025)

Although the decision to become a rebel is often born out of a passionate fervor for one’s homeland and personal liberties, letting your emotions cloud your judgment as a partisan in an occupied country can end badly. If you had the power to repel an invader in a pitched battle, you wouldn’t need to become a partisan, so picking your fights, managing your resources, and, when need be, cutting your losses, are all necessary considerations for a resistance fighter. Geralt doesn’t have a country and, according to some, emotions, but that doesn’t mean he can’t help an old friend maintain discipline. This page will provide a walkthrough for the quest An Eye for an Eye in The Witcher 3.

Starting Eye for an Eye

During the main quest Get Junior you’ll eventually need to get in contact with Vernon Roche, who can be found sulking with his fellow rebels at the Temerian Partisan Hideout northeast of Oxenfurt. He’ll take you to meet his Redanian contact and accidentally overachieve stupendously, and after your meeting he’ll tell you about some troubles he’s having with Ves, asking you to meet him at his camp. This starts the quest An Eye for an Eye, but you don’t need to go take care of it immediately - you can delay it until you depart for [The Isle of Mists] if you care to.

While it might not seem like it, this is an incredibly important secondary quest. First, if you do not complete it or if you botch it during the attempt, you will not get Vernon Roche’s aid later in the game, preventing you from earning the Full Crew achievement. You’ll also need to successfully complete this quest to avoid any complications with the Radovid questline going forward. Completing this quest comes highly recommended.

Meet with Roche at His Hideout

Travel back to the Temerian Partisan Hideout and talk to Vernon Roche, who is hiding in the depths of the caves his partisans are occupying. Talk to him and he’ll tell you about Ves’s simmering insubordination and ask for your hell in reining her in. Agree, then head outside the cave and fast travel to the Hanged Man’s Tree signpost where you’ll find Roche waiting for you. Before you talk to him, we highly suggest that you save your game. There’s a fight ahead and Ves can die during it - if she does you’ll fail the quest. You’ll want to reload the save you make before talking to Vernon Roche if that happens until you can get things to go your way.

Rescue Ves and Defeat the Nilfgaardians

Talk to Vernon and his optimism about heading off Ves’s assault is dashed when Geralt’s keen Witcher senses detect that the battle has already begun. Rush down the road to Mulbrydale and you’ll have to fight through numerous Nilfgaardians to reach Ves at the western edge of the village. First you’ll encounter some Nilgaardian Soldiers (Lv11-12) armed with one-handed weapons and two-handed spears and axes and beyond them are a pair of archers (Lv12) near some houses. Defeat those foes and you’ll be free to engage the group Ves is fighting, who consist of several halberdiers (Lv12) and a Nilfgaardian Officer (Lv12).

Kill the halberdiers first, as the mechanics of combat make Ves and Vernon a poor match against them. The Nilfgaardian Captain greatly outclasses them, too, but once you get his attention he should only aggro Geralt - once the halberdiers are dead and the Nilfgaardian Officer is fixated on Geralt, Ves is much less likely to die. Strong attack + dodge should be sufficient for the halberdiers, but the Nilfgaardian Officer is a dangerous foe… as far as generic humans go. Expect him to parry all frontal fast attacks unless Ves or Vernon knock him off balance (something they excel at, even if their damage output is trivial), so focus on countering his own attack. Ves and Vernon will attack constantly enough that you should have plenty of openings, but they’ll also make it harder to Axii him - not that it’s likely you’ll be able to coup-de-grave him anyways. Active Quen is useful for staggering him, if you need to.

Choice: Spare or Kill the Nilfgaardian

Defeat the Nilfgaardians while keeping Ves alive and she’ll get a stern reprimand from Vernon. Their spat is interrupted by the wounded wheezing of the Nilfgaardian Officer, who isn’t quite dead yet. When you get the chance, pick the option “Kill him, Roche. I don’t want any trouble.” and Roche will relent and put the Nilfgaardian out of your misery. On the other hand, if you respond with “Hard to argue with that.” Vernon will double down on his original inclinations and spare the Nilfgaardian. This choice doesn’t affect anything going forward, and whatever you choose, the quest will end afterwards, earning you 50 EXP.
